November 7-10 will bring the California Travel & Tourism Commission to London for the World Travel Market (WTM) — a vibrant business-to-business event presenting a diverse range of destinations and industry sectors to international travel professionals. An exciting addition to this year’s program will be the presence of the Corporation for Travel Promotion (CTP) and the unveiling of its long awaited branding campaign. CTTC also intends to make a big splash of its own at WTM this year with the industry premiere of the long-anticipated Dreamland documentary, featuring 12 everyday Californians who are in no way ordinary and bringing California to life through those who call it home.
More details regarding Liz and the documentary can be found here (see the November 25, 2010 entry).

Liz Phair - South Works Stage - 4:45 p.m.
Representing the ladies on Day 2 of the fest was Liz Phair. She took the stage in a short black dress, leaving her blonde hair to stand out as it flowed in the lake breeze. This turned out to be the best thing about a set that suffered from bad sound mixing and low energy. Phair's vocals could barely be heard over the drum set, and she couldn't work up the enthusiasm to even "yeah" convincingly during her own song. After a few minutes, most of the audience turned their attention to procuring dinner.

...I headed over to the South Works stage to catch sets from Liz Phair and Ben Folds. Liz Phair is an artist I listened to for a brief period in the 90's, but haven't followed her career since. It might have been the exhaustion or the hot sun beating down on me, but I was a bit bored by her set. And I wasn't alone, as my concert-going companions opted to take a nap on the wood chips rather than listen to her play.

5:12 p.m.: Liz Phair has devolved into a legacy act, and not a very good one at that. She almost exclusively performs songs ("Mesmerizing", "Supernova", "Cinco de Mayo") from her first two albums, yet even they have lost their bite and appear beholden to the former North Shore resident's rudimentary ability. She's all smiles, waving hands and windswept hair. Is she ignoring the fact that few in the audience pay attention or does she simply not care? Indeed, obliviousness has become her most admirable trait. There's almost no applause or reaction when she finishes a tune. Mainly, indifference. Her Valley Girl banter with band mates doesn't help the awkwardness, further exacerbated by clunky chords and a very faint falsetto range. Interestingly, the volume of Phair's concert is dialed back in comparison to those of the other artists that graced the stage. Intentional or coincidental?

Liz Phair, now 44, has mellowed quite a bit from the angry rock chick she appeared to be on 1993's Exile in Guyville. Her fine Saturday performance included "Polyester Bride" and "Never Said", which both had a nice bounce. Phair ended with one of her best and most lyrically deep tunes, "Fuck and Run".

[Kid CuDi's] show followed quiet sets from Ben Folds and Chicago-native Liz Phair, who drew comments from the crowd like, "When was the last time she had a hit?" Phair, who looked stunning in a black dress, failed to motivate the early-afternoon crowd, and struggled to connect vocally in the enormous outdoor venue.

07-08-11: LIZ POV / DMB CARAVAN / TWITTER
From Liz: [In regards to a question about the legalization of same-sex marriage in New York] Of course legalize same sex marriage. Everyone deserves a chance to be stymied by that venerable institution. ;) I know I've been AWOL - as recompense, I will email you thoughts (increasingly incoherent as the night progresses) on the 9th during the oh so longed for DMB caravan like your Twitter. Maybe not as many as seems usual for tweets but still, real time. So I will be posting Liz's POV of the DMB Caravan as it happens on Twitter on Saturday, July 9th. 3. Liz Phair, "Stratford-On-Guy"
Chicago is deeply embedded in Liz Phair's storytelling on 1993's Exile in Guyville—which may be part of why many mistakenly presumed that the songs were autobiographical—but none of them address the city as directly as the description of the city as seen from above in "Stratford-on-Guy".

State of Georgia, on the other hand, is about adults who can't stop behaving like teenagers. The mood is cheerful, the colors are bright, the music — composed in part by Liz Phair, of all people — is peppy.

Rolling Stone: Yet you rarely, if ever, swear in your songs.
Dave Matthews: I was thinking the other day if I could write a nice song about the word fuck. It's such a great word, and such an ancient word. Ryan Adams and Liz Phair are good at putting fuck into songs. It's so beautiful and conversational. You need a certain kind of confidence. I don't think I have the cool.

Some artists, though, are not so sure that times have changed as much as they'd like. The industry still pressures female artists to play up their sexuality because that's what sells, says Liz Phair, who is most lauded for her 1993 album, Exile in Guyville. The pressure was so intense, Phair says, that she felt she had been stuffed into a "little typical box" and tried to turn the exploitation on its head.
But she has since learned to coexist with the status quo.
"There was a moment when the cool girls were kicking ass and taking names," Phair says. "And right now it's the hot girl. I'm happy, personally, as long as our numbers are up."
