From the Minneapolis Star Tribune:
Clean Simpson shines at Star Party
Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune
May 24, 2004
Top 40 station KDWB (101.3 FM) added a few R-rated performers and an over-18 policy to its Star Party at the Quest nightclub in Minneapolis on Sunday, but the annual play-for-airplay concert was still at its best when it was best-behaved.
Clean is in, or at least it felt in at this Star Party, where half the acts played to pre-recorded music and all six of them played six songs or less.
Under those circumstances, wholesome headliner Jessica Simpson -- of MTV's "The Newlyweds" fame -- seemed more in her element than did the show's sexually edgy opener, Liz Phair. Even God-loving R&B singer Marion Winans was more compelling than girl-hating hip-hop star Eamon.
With teenage party rapper J-Kwon and bubblegum alt-rock band Rooney rounding out the lineup of squares, the concert offered plenty of diversity. However, Phair was the only act with more than two major albums to her name and any semblance of critical favor in her corner.
The Chicago rocker surprised many critics when she turned to a glossy, high-polished sound on a self-titled CD last year. Her acoustic Star Party appearance proved she doesn't mind being called a sell-out, but she apparently thinks she's still cooler than your average, everyday top 40 star.
"Is everybody here mostly 18 ... [and] can take a little language?" Phair asked in a stuck-up manner before "Supernova". Her off-color lyrics were less offensive than her off-key performance of "Extraordinary".
At least Phair balked a little at being bawdy. Raunchy New York singer/rapper Eamon went straight into a barrage of expletives at the start of his set, akin to playing the cool kid in church youth camp.
Eamon was so bad, he was at least good for a laugh. He and his sidekick MC were dressed in shopping-mall hip-hop attire reminiscent of Vanilla Ice. Four of his five songs featured the F-word in the chorus, including the hit "I Don't Want You Back". What little shock value he offered had been oversold in 15 minutes, which is the life expectancy you can put on his career.
Coming after Eamon, Winans -- son of gospel singer Vickie Winans -- at least displayed genuine singing talent. But too many of his songs felt disingenuous, in part because of the cheap-sounding backing tracks, and because he sang emotional lines like, "It hurt me so bad," in the same breath as yelling, "Where my ladies at?"
Following a rushed set by J-Kwon that can be summed up as being light 50 Cent, Simpson took the stage like the queen of the prom.
To her young female fans, Simpson's real-life "Newlyweds" love story added weight to fluffy songs like "I Think I'm in Love With You". Her gushing cover of Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" was too vanilla even for Britney Spears, but unlike Spears, Simpson actually sings in concert. She sings pretty well, too.
Of course, the guys on hand were interested in Simpson for another reason. From that standpoint, the singer, 23, disappointed with an all-black ensemble of capri pants and a not-too-revealing tank top. The outfit was PG, but it fit her and the entire Star Party well.

I saw Liz play last night in Rhode Island, at a Dog Track of all places, it was a listener appreciation party for a local radio station, which mostly plays top 40 junk, i don't listen but my teenage daughter does and she told me about the show, the tickets were $20 plus they fed you dinner, it was a steal... they started the show almost two hours late, and i didn't even bother to stay for the 2nd act (the calling).
Liz was AMAZING. They were acoustic and played new and old, it was a shame that almost no one else there had ever heard anything but the two songs they play on the radio, and the room was only about half full at best, so I felt badly for her and her back up guys... i was sitting about 15 feet away in the first "row".
But just so she knows there was at least one person there who really enjoyed it!!!

Liz Phair Rocked San Jose!
On the night of March 30th, Liz Phair left me with a really positive impressed after her performance at my "All Conference Party" which took place at the Spy Club in San Jose.
A special highlight of the evening took place when Farrell took the stage for the last song and sang "Mustang Sally" with Liz and her band. While I was in the background, the stage was Farrell's for the taking and it seemed that quite a number of people in the audience reached loudly and more positive for Farrell than any of Liz's songs.
I have some pictures from the party and I will be posting them in a day or two.

Not everyone appreciates such detailed vision. "He [Andy Slater] definitely thinks he knows better than the artist, and that was one thing that always offended me," said a musician from a band no longer on Capitol, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "We're fairly capable of deciding what font our logo should be in."
The rock singer Liz Phair disagreed. "He permeates all offices, so to speak," she said. "And at the same time he lets everybody do what they do."
She said Mr. Slater was closely and helpfully involved in her controversial decision to recast her image from intellectual songwriter to sexy pop star for her latest album, Liz Phair. Mr. Slater even rerecorded -- after hours -- the bass and drums for the album's first single, "Why Can't I?"
Liz Phair has sold 321,000 copies since June; Ms. Phair's best-selling album, Exile in Guyville, has sold 430,000 copies in 11 years. Still, it's not the Top 40 pop hit Capitol and Ms. Phair were hoping to register.

We get a glimpse of Liz Phair's split personality on Sunday. While the Chicago rocker is headlining at the House of Blues, she also will be appearing on NBC's American Dreams as Jackie DeShannon. Phair performs DeShannon's "When You Walk in the Room" on the show. "It was so much fun and I had fun learning the choreography," Phair told us. "And the minute I heard the song -- it's such an amazing song -- I wanted to do it."
Phair caught the acting bug after landing a small part in the 2002 film Cherish, playing a nasty office manager. She tells us she gets offers, but her music career doesn't leave much time for other pursuits. "I do acting because it's so exciting and it's such a parallel creative endeavor to the music," Phair told Armour & Co. "But I do not want to become an actress."

I got to go to one of those red-hot L.A. parties Thursday night, courtesy of Nashville's own teen pop singer Stacie Orrico.
Stacie was honored with pop mom/siren Liz Phair, milkshake-possessing Kelis, Shelby Lynne and others at Elle magazine's Women on the Verge party at the sniff-sniff Emporio Armani boutique in tony Beverly Hills. From what I could tell of the life-size pictures at the party, Liz Phair was a woman on the verge of coming out of her top. But I digress.

ROCK & REPUBLIC TAKES FASHION, MUSIC ON TOUR
By Michael Paoletta
After 18 months in the business, Los Angeles-based clothing company Rock & Republic is ready to break ranks with traditional fashion and launch its own tour.
Sheryl Crow, Cameron Diaz, Jewel, Liz Phair, Sarah Jessica Parker and Hilary Duff are among the entertainers in the music and film worlds who have embraced the brand's sexy, progressive, rock'n'roll-inspired denim designs.
Rock & Republic is hoping to hike its hip quotient even higher once its tour, called Rock Fashion, commences next month during New York Fashion Week.
Although no acts have yet been confirmed for the tour, each stop will include a fashion show and performances by rock bands and DJs, [chief designer/CEO Michael] Ball says. "In this way, we are pushing the envelope of what constitues a fashion show," he adds.
Next up, the Rock Fashion tour will take in London Fashion Week (also in February), the 29th Toronto International Film Festival (in September) and other events.
